Fallen hero
This is a series of images which shows the process that I go through when making a image.

In this case I started out by doing a pencil sketch. I did a few fast sketches before this one, where I practiced drawing the horse, tried out different compositions etc. When I was satisfied with the result, I scanned it at a resolution of 300 dpi.

After scanning it I put it into photoshop for some coloring. I started blocking out the basic colors, just to get an idea of what kind of mood I would end up with. I used a basic airbrush for the ground and a custom brush for the tree trunk to the right and for the foliage. I had toned down the line art by cutting it from the background layer and onto a new layer which I sat as multiply in layer mode and altered the visibility of. By doing that I can always add new layers underneath it to color upon.

In this stage I've done more shadows, colored the horse and the rider and painted some more tree trunks and foliage. Again with a combination of different custom and standard brushes.

Almost finished. More refinement of foliage, ground, grass, horse and rider. At this stage I have several different layers in the image. One for foliage, tree trunks, horse and rider, lighting etc.

Here's the finished painting. I added some more lighting effects and shadows in this one. Click it to see it a the full working resolution (big download).

That's it. I hope you enjoyed this little work in progress :)
